Australian PR Pathways

International students have access to a wide range of degree programs. Which one is right for you depends on a number of factors, including your degree, English proficiency, work history and other requirements. The three most common routes to Australian PR are described below.

  1. work visa after studying in Australia

Many applicants find that they are not immediately eligible for permanent residency after completing their studies. This may be because they lack the necessary points for skilled immigration or because they are not sponsored by an employer. In this case, applicants can choose the Post Study Work Visa (subclass 485), which is a suitable visa for after graduation.

Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485): This type of visa is divided into two categories: Post Study Work Stream and Graduate Work Stream.

  • Post-study Work Stream is for students who have recently graduated and should apply for this visa within 6 months of completing their course. The duration can be between 2 and 4 years, depending on qualifications.
  • Graduate Work Stream is for students who have skills in occupations listed on Australia’s Skilled Occupations List. The length of stay for this visa is up to 18 months.

Skilled Recognized Graduate Visa (Subclass 476): This visa is for international students who have completed technical studies at a specialized educational institution in the last 2 years, and they can obtain this visa for a period of stay from 18 months to 5 years, depending on their skills and qualifications.

The Post Study Work Visa makes it easy to meet the requirements for a permanent visa. This can be done, for example, by completing work experience in Australia or improving English skills to gain more points for skilled migration.

  1. General Skilled Migration

To qualify for a permanent visa under the skilled migration program, it is not necessary for an employer to sponsor you. The program is based on a points test, with a minimum score of 65 points. Qualifying visa points are awarded based on factors such as your skills, work experience, English proficiency, educational background, etc. to add points.

  1. Employer Sponsored Visa

This is an alternative visa pathway if the employer does not meet the requirements for skilled immigration. This is the next best option as it is easier compared to general skilled migration. Under this pathway, you first get a temporary visa and then you can apply for a permanent visa after working in Australia for the sponsoring employer for at least three years.

Australian Student Visa

The visa you need to study in Australia is the student visa (subclass 500). This visa applies to all international students, regardless of their field of study.

  • The Subclass 500 visa allows you to stay and study in Australia for the duration of your course (up to 5 years).
  • Students are allowed to work a maximum of 40 hours during the semester and unlimited hours during the semester break.
  • Students can bring their family members to Australia on this visa.

Requirements for an Australian student visa

  1. letter of offer from the enrolled university
  2. confirmation of enrolment (CoE)
  3. proof of English language skills (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE)
  4. genuine temporary entrant (GTE)
  5. proof of sufficient funds
  6. medical certificate of good conduct
  7. health insurance coverage for overseas students (OSHC)
  8. no criminal record
